Values
Values can be described as a set of principles or preferences for behavior.
In this sense, they are deeply held convictions or underlying assumptions that influence both attitudes and behaviors.
Actual behavior may not always be consistent with stated values. Stated values have an element of aspiration. The degree of harmony between values and behavior hinges on attention to feedback, self-reflection, intellectual self-honesty, and presence (self-awareness in the moment). Learning to live one’s values is a lifetime endeavor.
With these ideas in mind, I approach my work and my clients with the following in mind:
Respect
To respect is to show consideration; to hold in esteem. For me, respect is demonstrated through active listening, efforts at inclusion and collaboration, and generally behaving in ways the fosters individual dignity. Respect also means operating with honesty and integrity; that is, taking appropriate responsibility and holding myself professionally accountable. These behaviors show respect toward the people with which one works.
Openness
Openness is an internal state demonstrated through words and actions. To be open is to maintain a state of receptivity to other people and ideas. It is acted out in the processes of active listening and engaged questioning. Openness is demonstrated early in a project through the inclusive development of goals and outcome measures. Openness persists through all phases of the work by the ongoing collection of input to allow timely clarification, redesign, and correction. Respect and integrity rely on openness.
Humor
Joy. Wit. Silliness. Hard work is hard. Work without humor can sour. Humor builds bond and helps people persevere. Humor cannot be at the expense of another. Humor is about categories of things, not about individuals or groups of people. Humor is essential for the success of any work effort.
Humility
To be truly humble is to be able to take joy in one’s living. Humble is not meek or self-critical. A humble person embraces collaboration and the contribution of others in goal achievement. Humility is the fierce acceptance of interdependence. A humble person attends to the words and actions of other to gain self-knowledge in pursuit of a harmonious life.
